Practice German letters

Welcome to your journey into the German language! The first step in mastering any new language is understanding its alphabet, and German is no exception. The German alphabet consists of 26 standard letters, just like the English alphabet, but it also includes a few special characters that make German unique.

In addition to A through Z, you’ll encounter three important vowels with umlauts: ä, ö, and ü. These small dots above the letters change the sound of the vowel and are essential for correct pronunciation and meaning. You’ll also meet the distinctive "ß" (called Eszett or sharp S), which is used in words like "Straße" (street) and "groß" (big).

While many German letters look familiar, their pronunciation can be quite different from English. For example, the letter "w" is pronounced like "v", and "v" often sounds like "f". Learning these sounds early will help you speak German more clearly and confidently.

In this section, you’ll learn each letter of the German alphabet, how to pronounce it correctly, and how it’s used in common words. Whether you're a complete beginner or brushing up on the basics, mastering the German alphabet is the foundation for reading, writing, and speaking the language successfully.
